Windows 10 has reached the end! 😮 But what does that actually mean?
You’ve probably seen the news or a snippet online that Windows 10 has officially reached ‘end of support’ – but what does that actually mean? Should you be worried about it? Do you know if you are even running Windows 10 or are you already on Windows 11? So many questions… so lets try and get some answers.
First, lets check what version you are running:
- Click the start button on your keyboard and type About your PC.
- School down to where it says Windows specifications and take note:If it has Windows 10 in the name, that’s the older one
If it has Windows 11, you’re all sorted! phew
Okay so if you are on Windows 10, then what does that mean for you?
Basically, Microsoft has stopped giving Windows 10 updates. That means no more security patches or bug fixes. Your computer will still work fine for now, but over time it’ll start to fall behind on security and compatibility.
Think of it like driving an older car that no longer gets serviced. It still runs, but each month it gets a bit riskier to rely on not ideal!
Why upgrading matters
Windows 11 isn’t just newer, it’s safer. If your computer can handle the upgrade, it’s worth doing sooner rather than later. You see, there is a constant game of cat and mouse between hackers and software owners. Hackers are trying to find a hole to get into a system, and the software owners are constantly trying to find and patch them up. When a piece of software reaches end of life, it means the software owners move on and no longer patch the holes, so over time more and more holes are discovered, and exploited – which is why you need to keep everything up to date all the time (If you own a business, this also includes your website and it’s all systems aswell!)

UPDATE: Good news everyone – Microsoft has released the ESU Program for Windows 10 (Extended Security Updates) – which you can now enable to keep your Windows 10 devices for a little longer, provided you pay for it – $61 USD per device for Year 1, doubling every year for a maximum of 3 years. It’s not perfect, but it does mean you can squeeze more life out of your computer until moving to Windows 11.
