A Deep Dive into Data Recovery and Prevention

In today’s digital age, the importance of data cannot be overstated. Whether it’s precious family photos, critical business documents, or the last 10 years of random files sitting in the ‘To Sort’ folder that you’ve been meaning to get to. Lets have a look at the two different types of hard drives and their data recovery rates!

Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) have been the backbone of data storage for decades. They rely on spinning disks coated with magnetic material. Data is read and written by a read/write needle that moves across the disks surface. While HDDs are known for their large storage capacities and relatively low cost, they are also prone to mechanical failures due to their moving parts.

Solid State Drives (SSDs) on the other hand have no moving parts. They use flash memory to store data, which makes them faster, more durable, and energy-efficient compared to HDDs (and smaller!)  However, SSDs typically come with a higher price tag per gigabyte of storage .

A 8TB HDD at the time of writing is between $200-$250, whereas the SSD equivalent is around $800-$1000! If you want the best, SSDs are the way to go, but this is often overkill for personal use.

Data Recovery: The Crucial Differences

When it comes to data recovery, the differences between HDDs and SSDs are significant and affect the cost and chance of recovery.

1. Soft Data Recovery ❤️‍

This is the simplest form of data recovery, often needed when files are accidentally deleted, a drive is formatted without backing up data, or the computer has died and the data is intact, but not accessible until the computer is opened up and the hard drive is connected to another system to access the data. In such cases, the data itself isn’t physically damaged but is no longer accessible through normal means.

    • HDDs: soft data recovery on HDDs involves scanning the disks for residual data and reconstructing the file system. Depending on how long ago the files were deleted and where they were stored, depends on the chances of success, but this is the most successful scenario when it comes to recovery.
    • SSDs: For SSDs, soft data recovery is trickier due to the way they manage data. Features like TRIM can permanently erase deleted data, making recovery more challenging. Specialized software might still recover some data, but success rates vary.
2. Physical Data Recovery

This is the other type of recovery and involves physical repairing or replacing damaged hardware components to retrieve data. It’s often necessary when the drive suffers from mechanical or electronic failures (If your hard drive is making a clicking sound then unfortunately it may need physical repair)

    • HDDs: Physical recovery can involve replacing the read/write head, fixing spindle motor issues, or addressing platter damage. Professional data recovery services with cleanroom facilities are often required.
    • SSDs: Physical recovery for SSDs is complex due to their integrated circuitry. It might involve repairing or replacing chips, controllers, or circuit boards. As SSDs lack moving parts, mechanical damage is rare, but electronic failures can be daunting.

There is an industry saying that goes something along the lines of “If your data doesn’t exist in a least three (3) places, then it may as well not exist at all.”

Which brings us nicely to the next point – Prevention!

Prevention: The Best Form of Data Recovery

While understanding data recovery is essential, prevention is always better then recovery; here are some handy tips to consider:

  • Regular Backups: Keep regular backups of your data using reliable methods like external drives or cloud storage (Or even better, both!)
  • Use Reliable Drives: Buy good quality drives from reputable brands such as Seagate or Western Digital and consider the balance between speed, capacity, and reliability – It may be tempting to buy 2nd hard drive, and while there isn’t anything wrong with that – be mindful of the age and wear of these drives before relying on them for your backup!
  • Handle with Care: Especially for HDDs, avoid physical shocks and handle your drives with care – Try not to drop your external hard drive on the floor, or throw your laptop across the room hoping it lands on the bed!

  • Does your data exist in more then one place?
  • Do you have a backup solution in place?
  • Are you emotionally and financially prepared to lose all your data?
